10 Easy Halloween Costumes for Kids
If you are like my husband and I, you probably have waited until the last minute to make up your Halloween costumes before. We seem to always have a difficult time deciding on what we want to be. The last few years we ended up picking something last minute and fairly easy, and then making the costumes right before Halloween. Here are a few of the costumes we have done for our kiddos the last couple of years.
Eventually I will add tutorials on exactly how we made these costumes, but for now, you can find inspiration from the images and the items used below.
10 Easy Kids Costumes for Halloween
ONE: Viking Infant Costume
This was Canyon’s first Halloween, he was just about a month old and I knew he needed something he could sleep in comfortably. I made this the day before Halloween, it was a quick and easy costume to make. The only items that might be a bit tricky to come by would be the shield, my husband made that, but you could probably find something similar, make one or have the costume without it. You may also need to plan ahead to order the beanie, we were gifted this one when he was born so had it for the costume.
Infant Viking Costume:
Gray Onesie and Leggings
Dollar Store Retractable Knife (we made ours but a dollar store knife will do)
Chain or leather string (to attach fur cape)
Socks
Plastic Skull Rings
Hot Glue
TWO: Baby Lion Costume
Canyon was a Lion for his 2nd Halloween, and our family dressed up for the CarnEvil. My husband was a knife thrower, I was his assistant and our daughter was the Ring Master. We bought Canyon a lion costume at the Halloween Store and I added the extra faux fur that I had from his viking costume as the mane and on the tail. The costume had little flannel hair that didn’t look as much like a mane so I upgraded the costume a bit with the faux fur.
Baby Lion Costume:
Lion Costume
Family Circus (CarnEvil) Costumes
THREE: Star Wars Ewok Costume
When I was pregnant with Hudson I had a hard time finding a good costume to wear, we ended up decided to be characters from Star Wars. We picked Princess Leia’s Endor outfit. Han Solo for my husband and Wicket for Canyon. We used his lion costume from the previous year. I removed the mane and added the top and spear for Wickets outfit.
Ewok Costume:
Lion Costume
Mens XL Shirt in rust (I found one at Walmart)
Leather String
Bamboo Stick
Garage Floor Foam Tile or Craft Foam
Our family picture this year was tricky…but we did our best…
FOUR: BooLarina
My daughter had been a Boolarina at least 5 times. This was my go to costume for her to wear to school when I didn’t have her real costume ready. It is really easy to make and costs very little. I made the tutu and the headband but you can find similar items on Etsy, I have added a few links to ones that I think are pretty cute.
Boolarina Costume:
Striped Knee High Socks
Ballet Slippers (I add spider rings to them, but they aren’t pictured)
Iron On Halloween Patch (for leotard)
This year we went trick or treating with our cousins, we had them go into the studio where I worked and we did a photo shoot in their costumes, it was a lot of fun.
A Fairy, a Boolarina and She-Ra, Princess of Power!
FIVE: Cat Costume
This is another easy costume and a great one to wear to school. My daughter dressed up and was able to wear her costume comfortably all day.
Cat Costume:
Black Felt
Headband (Or cat ear headband)
Long Sleeve Black Shirt
Black Leggings
Faux Fur
SIX: Cleopatra Costume
We made most of the elements of this costume, but Halloween stores have the basics of what you will need and you can pick up other items to embelish this one.
Cleopatra Costume:
Gold Earrings
Black Wig
SEVEN: The Greatest American Hero Costume
Since Canyon has blonde curly hair we knew we wanted him to dress up as the Greatest American Hero. This costume isn’t really available to purchase so we had to come up with all of the pieces ourselves. I have included a PDF of the symbol that I made for his shirt. Depending on the size of the shirt you may have to tweak the size when printing.
I used gray costume elastic that I found at the fabric store for the belt, and I sewed gray bias tape on the cuffs and on the hem of the shirt. I also ironed on the bias tape to the pant legs. The cape I made using black fabric and red bias tape but you can find a plain black cape and add the bias tape or use it without.
Greatest American Hero Costume:

Gray Elastic
Black Cape
Gray Bias Tape

EIGHT: Peter Pan Costume
The year our family was characters from Star Wars Mykah decided to join our friends family and dress up along with them as a character from Peter Pan. This was the year Canyon was an Ewok, so we used some of the bamboo stick from his spear for the pan flute. The hat was made out of felt and we added a feather. For the shirt we found a green shirt that had a lace up front at Walmart, we just cut the bottom and the sleeves.
Peter Pan Costume:
Brown Leggings
Leather String
Brown Knee High Boots
Bamboo Stick or Pan Flute
Green Shirt
Green Felt
Feather
Brown Belt
Dollar Store Sword
NINE: Nightmare Before Christmas Trick-or-Treater Costume
This one is borderline easy…the mask wasn’t the easiest to make but you can find them online, though they can be a bit pricey…I did find some felt versions and this mask could probably be made quite easily using colored craft foam.
Since Hudson was pretty small for his first Halloween we knew we needed something comfy for him to sleep in. He was too big for the Viking costume and we sorta wanted him to have a costume of his own for his first Halloween. We decided to have him be Lock, the little devil trick or treater from The Nightmare Before Christmas cartoon. We made the mask and had him wearing a read shirt and red sweatpants. We didn’t add any straps to the mask and Hudson loved holding it up to his face. It was the perfect costume for a 7 month old baby.
We made the mask using garage floor tiles and craft paint.
Greatest American Hero Costume:
Red Long Sleeve Shirt
Red Sweat Pants
Lock Mask
TEN: White Rabbit Costume
Mykah and her friends dress up sometimes together at school. One year they were Alice in Wonderland Characters. Mykah was the White Rabbit. We decided to go with a semi ‘Disney Bounding’ style for her costume. This was an easy costume to put together and she was able to wear it the whole day at school.
White Rabbit Costume:
Light Blue Jeans
Red Vest
White Shirt
Clock
Gold Plastic Bead Necklace
Rabbit Ears
These are just a few of the costumes we have made over the years, Halloween is one of our favorite holidays. My husband and I enjoy making our costumes and the kids (well not Hudson quite yet…he is only 19 months) but Mykah and Canyon are really into Halloween and it is a lot of fun celebrating this holiday with our kids.
Now I just need to figure out what we are going to be this year for Halloween…
