Jumping Jelly Beans Knit Beanie Pattern with Bulky Yarn

I originally created this beanie while knitting hats to donate for Hat Not Hate. It’s one of my “simple but significant” beanie patterns, easy to follow, easy to memorize, and perfect for mindful knitting. The design features the hurdle stitch, which adds a lovely texture and makes for a clean, classic look.

Jumping Jelly Beans Knit Beanie Pattern PDF

Supplies Needed

Needle: US Circular knitting needle size 10 with 16″ cable. Optional, 4 US size 10  DPNs

Yarn: Bulky Weight (size 5), 1 skein approximately 80-90 yds

Designed using Hand Dyed yarn from the following designers

Tapestry or Darning Needle Stitch Markers

Measuring Tape

Gauge

Gauge: 14 stitches × 18 rows = 4″ × 4″ (10 cm × 10 cm)
in stockinette stitch, using recommended needles.

Size

One size fits most Youth/Adult

dpn  = double pointed needle (optional)

k =  knit

sl1k1psso = slip one stitch, knit one stitch and pass the slipped stitch over

p = purl    

p2tog = purl two stitches together

rep = repeat

sl = slip stitches

st(s) = stitch(es)

( ) = number in parentheses at the end of a row is the number left during the decrease rounds.

Selected abbreviations are described in more detail in the written PDF pattern available in my Etsy Shop.

Cast On 54 sts, I use the longtail cast on method, but any stretchy brim cast on method will work.

Place marker, connect ends, being sure not to twist stitches. Be sure to leave at least a 6” yarn tail.

Round 1 – 9: k1, p1 to end.  

Round 10: knit to end.

Round 11: purl to end.

Round 12: k1, p1 to end.

Round 13: k1, p1 to end.

Repeat Rounds 10–13 until work measures between 6.5″ and 8″ from cast-on edge:

• For Medium/Fitted, stop at 6.5″

• For Large/Slouchy, stop at 8″

Important: Be sure to complete a full repeat of all 4 rounds (Rounds 10–13) before beginning the decrease section.
Your final round before starting the decreases should be a repeat of Round 13.

*If you want a longer beanie, repeat rounds 10-13 an additional time, or as many times until you reach your desired length. 

Restart round count. 

When decreasing, switch to double-pointed needles (DPNs) when it becomes too difficult to continue comfortably on your circular needle. Alternatively, you may continue working the decreases using the magic loop method or two circular needles, depending on your preferred technique.

Round 1: *sl1k1psso, k4, repeat from * until end. (45 sts, left)

Round 2: *p2tog, p3, rep from * until end. (36 sts left)

Round 3: k1, p1 to end. (36 sts, left)

Round 4: k1, p1 to end. (36 sts left)

Round 5: *sl1k1psso, k2, repeat from * until end. (27 sts, left)

Round 6: *p2tog, p1, rep from * until end. (18 sts, left)

Round 7: k1, p1 to end. (218 sts, left)

Round 8: k1, p1 to end. (18 sts, left)

Round 9: *sl1k1psso, repeat from * until end. (9 sts. left)

Cut yarn, leaving at least 6” for weaving in. Thread yarn tail onto a darning needle and transfer all stitches from circular needle onto darning needle with yarn tail. Cinch closed and weave in.

Add a pom-pom or leave as is.
