Skinny Scrunchies 2.0 Free Crochet Pattern

Free Crochet Skinny Scrunchies Pattern

Adding back another lost post to the blog today!

I originally posted my Free Skinny Scrunchies 2.0 pattern on April 13, 2022.

Another fun skinny crochet scrunchies pattern. My first skinny scrunchie was just working half double crochet stitches around an elastic hair tie. I wanted to make one that was a bit more frilly and stuck on the hair tie a bit more and decided to try a different stitch. This new skinny scrunchie uses the extended double crochet and I think this might be my new favorite way to make a skinny scrunchie. It is just slightly bigger and has a little more frill then the other one but I think you will like this one, and they are pretty fun to make!

I have also added a few free printables onto this post, you can find the free digital downloads at the end of the post.

Please consider supporting me and my blog

Before we dive into the pattern, I just wanted to share a little about how my blog works.

You might notice that my blog is completely ad-free. That’s a choice I’ve made intentionally, I believe ads can really interrupt the experience, and I want my site to be an enjoyable space for you to browse. I absolutely understand why other creators use ads, they’re a valuable source of income for the time and effort that goes into creating content.

For me, offering free patterns and printables is something I genuinely love doing, even though it takes quite a bit of time behind the scenes. If you enjoy what I share and would like to support my work, one of the best (and free!) ways to help is by visiting my YouTube channel, watching a few videos, and subscribing. Every view and subscriber helps me continue sharing content here without adding pop-up ads or clutter.

I truly hope to keep this blog ad-free for as long as I can, and growing my YouTube channel plays a big role in making that possible. Thank you so much for being here and for your support it means a lot to me!

the pattern

Tie yarn onto an elastic hair tie, be sure to give it a good stretch to make sure it doesn’t break before starting.

Ch2 to start.

Round 1: EDC around the hair tie (like you would work stitches into a magic adjustable ring)

Work 80-90 EDC then cut yarn and pull through, join with a seamless join, and then weave in yarn tails.

I like to use the yarn tails to add my tag and tie my knots under the tag, I think this makes for a very nice looking finished product.

Below is a quick video tutorial showing how I make these scrunchies.
There’s no voiceover, but the video provides a clear visual guide to the entire process, from the stitch used, to the seamless join, and how I add the tag at the end. It’s a simple, visual walkthrough if you prefer to see the steps in action!

When I started making these scrunchies, the idea actually came to me after I had made a few  Moss Crossbody Purses, a pattern by Karen from Kazzolas. You can find her shop on Etsy and follow her on Instagram at @kazzolas_crochet. I had some leftover yarn and wanted to make something quick and easy with it, and a scrunchie felt like the perfect project!

I had made skinny scrunchies before, just using half double crochet stitches, but this time I wanted to try something different. I thought of the extended double crochet stitch, which I first discovered while making a few Jordan Cozies a pattern by Liz from The Little Yarnery . You can also find Liz and her creations on Instagram at @thelittleyarnery.

What’s great is that both the Moss Crossbody Purse and the Jordan Cup Cozy work up great with the same types of yarn that are perfect for these scrunchies! I was able to make one Moss Crossbody Purse, one Jordan Cup Cozy, and a couple of scrunchies, all from just one cake of Dishie yarn from WeCrochet. How neat is that?
