Car Coaster Free Crochet Pattern and Video Tutorial

I started making Car Coasters about a year ago and have been using a Cotton version in my car and have absolutely loved it. I saw another maker friend make hers using Bernat Maker Yarn and thought that was such a smart yarn to use. I updated my pattern to work with a bulky weight yarn and have been so happy with mine that I thought I would share the pattern on my blog!

6mm Crochet Hook US H-J – or appropriate hook for the yarn you are using.

Bulky Weight 5 yarn – Approximately 10 yards – Yarn used is Bernat Maker

Vegan Suede Tag – I use blank tags that I sell in my Etsy Shop

Size: Approximately 3″ x 3″ – Size may vary depending on the yarn used and how lose or tight you crochet. You do want the coaster to measure around 3″ as that is a good universal size that will fit most car cup holders. If you find that your coaster is larger, you can try sizing down your hook or using a slightly tighter tension when creating your puff sttitches. If you find the coaster too small, you can try using a slightly loser tension when crocheting the puff stitches to see if that helps.

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

hdc2tog puff st abbreviated as (puff st) in this pattern = half double crochet 2 together puff stitch

MAR  = magic adjustable ring

st(s) = stitch(es)

sl st = slip stitch

() = numbers in parenthesis are the number of stitches at the end of the round.

Hdc2tog puff st (puff) =  yarn over hook, insert into space between hdc sts from previous round and pull through you should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over hook, insert into the same space, you will have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull yarn through all 5 loops. DO NOT CH1.

All stitches will be crocheted in the space between each stitch.

Chain stitches DO NOT count as a stitch.

Start with MAR, ch1

Round 1: 9 hdc into MAR, pull MAR tail to cinch closed. Join in the beginning with a sl st. (9)

Round 2: ch1, 2 puff sts into each space (the space between each hdc). Join with sl st (18)

Round 3: ch1, *1 puff st into next space, 2 puff sts into the next space, repeat from * to end. Join with sl st (27)

Finishing: Sl st around the edge of round, into the top of each of the puff stitches. In this round you will add your vegan suede pull tab by slip stitching it into place. Join in the beginning with a sl st.

Cut yarn and weave in yarn tails.
