The New Free Crochet Velvet Scrunchie Pattern

My New and Improved Crochet Velvet Scrunchies Pattern

Along with a free printable download for Mermaid Hair Scrunchies towards the end of the post.

I came up with this updated crochet scrunchies pattern late last year when I discovered a new crochet technique where you double crochet two stitches at the SAME TIME! I have made some tweaks to the pattern and have a new pattern video to show you how I make these super fluffy velvet scrunchies.

One thing I have noticed that makes these scrunchies ideal is that they are simple to crochet and they hold up their shape over time much better than my other treble crochet scrunchies pattern.

This pattern uses what I call a 2-At-A-Time Double Crochet and it is the PERFECT stitch for this pattern. I had been using treble crochet stitches to make this type of crochet scrunchie and I find that over time the treble crochet loosens up too much and looks a bit icky with random loops of yarn here and there. With this new stitch the yarn doesn’t loop up so much and looks so much better after it is crocheted and after they are worn, this is my new favorite way to make crochet velvet scrunchies!

Materials:

Velvet Yarn – I like Bernat brand velvet yarns best, I usually use the baby velvet or the regular velvet. They have such a wide variety of colors and it is pretty easy to find at most craft stores.

You can also purchase online, these were the sites where I found the best deals at the time of this post.

Optional Darning or Yarn Needle for weaving in ends.

Other yarns can be used, I have used Lion Brand Vel-luxe which is a great option too, it works up just as nicely as the Bernat yarn but it sheds a little more and it doesn’t have as many color options, but it does have the best mustard color yarn I have found and a pretty awesome green so I do use those colors quite often. I have also found a velvet yarn at Hobby Lobby but it is my least favorite, it is a bit too thick and sheds like crazy, I wouldn’t recommend the Hobby Lobby Velvet yarn as it is really just too messy to use and doesn’t look as good for crochet scrunchies in my opinion.

This is a fairly easy pattern if you are familiar with crochet terms, you will be asked to do a partial double crochet along with a yarn over. If you do not know how to do a double crochet you will need to understand that stitch in order to complete a 2-At-A-Time Double Crochet. This pattern/tutorial will assume you know what a double crochet is and how to complete a partial double crochet.

Let’s Get Started – This is a Video/Photo Tutorial

Terms:

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

st(s) – stitch(es)

YO = yarn over

For this pattern you will be completing 60-70, 2-At-A-Time Double Crochet stitches around an elastic hair tie.

I usually use 70 stitches when I am using the Bernat Baby Velvet as it is a bit thinner than their other velvet yarns.

60 stitches seems to be perfect when using the thicker Bernat Velvet/Crushed Velvet or the Lion Brand Vel-luxe Yarn.

Watch the video pattern or keep scrolling for the photo tutorial.

  1. Tie yarn onto an elastic hair tie. Leave a short tail, maybe 5-6 inches or so
  2. Ch 4
  3. Complete a partial dc into the 2nd ch from the hook (the first part before drawing the yarn through the loops) 3 loops on your hook
  4. Complete a 2nd partial dc into the center of the elastic hair tie, 5 loops on hook
  5. YO and draw yarn through 2 loops, 4 loops left on hook
  6. YO and draw yarn through 2 loops, 3 loops left on hook
  7. YO and draw yarn through 2 loops, 2 loops left on hook
  8. YO and draw yarn through last 2 loops on hook, completed 2-At-A-Time Double Crochet
  9. You will repeat steps 3-8 until you reach the end. When you insert your hook after the initial 2-At-A-Time Double Crochet you will insert your hook into the space between the 2 bottom sts as pictured in image 9, then insert into the elastic hair tie.

When completing this stitch you will end up with 2 rows of double crochet. Continue until you reach beginning, I don’t normally count my stitches, but you can use the suggested 60-70 stitches or any desired amount, that is one of the cool thing about this pattern, it is very easy to make these scrunchies with any number of stitches you choose.

Once you have your desired number of 2-At-A-Time Double Crochet stitches completed join at the beginning with a slip stitch. Take both yarn tails and weave them around the first and the last stiches, so that both yarn tails meet in the middle. Tie a few knots, but be sure not to pull to tight this yarn can break easily. Trim yarn and hide knot between the stitches and now you have a completed Velvet Scrunchie.

Looking for packaging for your super cute crochet velvet scrunchies I have some cute scrunchies printables in my Etsy shop!

And I have a little freebie that I made up just for you guys, this is a design that I have in my Etsy Shop for Mermaid Hair Scrunchies and Ear Warmers and I decided to make one that had a mermaid scale pattern in the background and add it as a freebie to go with these scrunchies.

I recently picked up a few cakes of this Velvet Stripes yarn and I was pretty excited to see that it matched perfectly with my freebie mermaid hair scrunchies printables 🙂 And how cool is it that the stripes yarn has 4 matching colors that will be perfect for making coordinating scrunchies packs. I can’t wait to see how many scrunchies I can get from each stripe color in this yarn.

I really hope you have enjoyed this pattern, if I ever figure out an easy way to explain this stitch I will be sure to update with a better written pattern. Also, if you have the time I would appreciate it if you would visit my Etsy Shop, sales on tags and other printables help me out a lot so that I can keep adding free patterns like these on my blog. I love not having ads all over my site, I don’t want to add ads other than a few affiliate links here and there to my posts as I think ads really ruin the viewing experience on my blog. I am hoping if I can continue to make sales in my Etsy Shop to help me with my finances I can continue to add freebies to my site that are ad free.

Thank you so much 🙂

    Hello.. I’m not really understanding the instructions because if you complete the double crochet up until the last yarn over, you will have 2 loops on the hook not 3.. Unless you stop before the last yarn over.. Thanks in advance!

    • Savla says:

      Sorry for any confusion, you do a partial before yarning over so that you have the 3 loops on your hook. There is a video that goes with it that better shows what to do. I made a change to the wording.

    This was such a quick and easy project!! And it came out perfectly! I use a thinner yarn than the velvet you suggested and I had no issue. I will most definitely be making this again!

      Thank you 🙂 I am so glad you liked the pattern and that is great to hear it works up well using a thinner yarn!
