Here are 3 fun crochet scrunchies patterns. I have been trying to design new patterns for scrunchies that don’t look like all the other ones out there, and ones that have more of a textured fabric look.
In all 3 of these patterns you will be using a half double crochet stitch and inserting your hook into a different spot to create a different look for the stitch. This is why it is a 3-in-One pattern, 3 scrunchies that for the most part use the same stitch. These 3 patterns all use the half double crochet stitch, the difference in each is where you insert your hook. It is really cool that you can do the same stitch and inserting your hook in a different spot can change the way the crochet fabric looks.
The size of the scrunchie is mostly dependent on the size hook used. The C2 is for the small, and the G6 is for the large scrunchie. The image below shows the same scrunchie using the same yarn both are crocheted following pattern 2.
The first pattern is a pattern that is available as a photo tutorial on my blog. The Lacey Crochet Scrunchie is the pattern that will set up the foundation for the others, you will use the same method of tubular crochet around a hair tie for all 3 of the scrunchies patterns, just only change the place where you insert your hook.
Terms for all 3 patterns
Ch = chain FLO = front loop only HDC = half double crochet
SLST = slip stitch ST(S) = stitches
Materials:
This pattern works with size 1 or size 2 yarns
Size 1 super fine yarn, I used Loops & Thread Woolike Yarn and Yarn Bee Spinesse Yarn
Hooks C2 2.75mm & G6 4mm Crochet Hooks
Scissors
Darning Needle
Optional Scrunchies Wraps
Pattern One: The Lacey Scrunchie
This pattern uses Tubular Crochet around an elastic hair tie. I unfortunately do not know what the stitch is called that I am using, but you will be crocheting into the back 2 loops of a hdc in the round, or it can be described as the 2nd and 3rd loop of the hdc.
Once you have done the first pattern you will know how to work through the other patterns by modifying where you insert your crochet hook and changing the hook size.
Make a foundation chain of 17 with a C2 hook for a small scrunchie, or Chain 19 with a G6 for a large scrunchie.
Your foundation chain will be a loop around the elastic hair tie.
Step one 1: Hdc into each chain until you reach the end, slst to join the round.
After row one you will be crocheting continuously in the round.
Step 2: Ch1 *Hdc into the back 2 loops of each stitch, repeat from * continuously until your tube reaches the desired length. Slst to join the last round.
Finishing: On your last round, be sure to match up the ends of the tube so that your first stitch of the chain and the last hdc meet at the same point. Sew both ends together and cut yarn, tie off and weave in ends.
I don’t measure my tube, I just work my tube to a length that looks scrunchie enough for me and isn’t super tight when I stretch out the elastic hair tie.

Pattern Two: The Lily Scrunchie
This pattern uses Tubular Crochet around an elastic hair tie. You will be crocheting into the front loop of a hald double crochet in the round.
Make a foundation chain of 17 with a C2 hook for a small scrunchie, or Chain 19 with a G6 for a large scrunchie.
Insert chain into the center of the elastic hair tie, being careful not to twist the stitches, join with a slip stitch. Your foundation chain will be a loop around the elastic hair tie.
Row 1: Hdc into each chain until you reach the end, slst to join the round.
After row one you will be crocheting continuously in the round.
Row 2: Ch1 *Hdc into the front loop only of each stitch, repeat from * continuously until your tube reaches the desired length. Slst to join the last round.
Follow the steps to finish the scrunchie from Pattern 1.
Pattern Three: The Lillian Scrunchie
For the 3rd pattern follow Pattern 2, when you finish crocheting the tube around the elastic hair tie, you inside out the tube so that the wrong side of the work is showing. Then sew the two ends of the tube together, cut yarn and tie off.
Make a foundation chain of 17 with a C2 hook for a small scrunchie, or Chain 19 with a G6 for a large scrunchie.
For the 3rd pattern follow Pattern 2, when you finish crocheting the tube around the elastic hair tie, you inside out the tube so that the wrong side of the work is showing. Follow the steps to finish the scrunchie from Pattern 1.
And that’s it, now you have 3 different scrunchies that all use the same stitch 🙂
