Basketweave Messy Bun Beanie

This was such a fun beanie to knit up, perfect for the end of winter and springtime as it is made of a light weight acrylic yarn. The perfect beanie to wear on a chilly morning, perfect for early morning or evening jogs, dropping the kids off at school or just hanging out with friends. This messy bun beanie is a quick knit beanie, easily knits up in just a few sittings, and perfect for knitting while watching your favorite shows.


Materials for Completion:

Needle: US circular knitting needle size 8

Yarn: Worsted Weight 1 Skein

*Suggested yarn, Lion Brand Heartland

Elastic Hair Tie

Darning Needle

Measuring Tape

Gauge:

4” x 4” = 17 sts x  20 rows in basketweave stitch.

Size:

Approximately 8” from cast on edge to top of hat and 17” -23” circumference.

Terms:

co = cast on            k = knit            k2tog = knit two stitches together

p = purl                   p2tog = purl two stitches together

rep = repeat         sts = stitches          sl1 = slip one


Messy bun knit beanie pattern

Directions:

Cast On 64 sts, I use the long-tail cast on method, any co method should work.

Join in the round being sure stitches are not twisted.

Start Pattern:    

Rounds 1-5: *k4, p4; rep from * to end.

Rounds 6-10: *p4, k4; rep from * to end.

Rounds 11-40: rep rounds 1-10 three times more for a total of 40 rounds.

Hat should measure approximately 6.5 – 7”   at this point. If you want a longer hat, repeat rounds 1-10 a fourth time before moving onto the next round.

Rounds 41-43: *k4, p4; rep from * to end.

Rounds 44: *k2tog, k2, p4; rep from *to end.

Round 45: *k3, p2tog, p2; rep from *to end.

Round 46: *p2tog, p1, k2tog, k1; rep from *to end.

Round 47: *p2, k2; rep from * to end.


How to attach a hair tie to a messy bun beanie

Adding the hair tie:    

Cut yarn leaving a long (45”-55” tail) thread yarn onto darning needle.

Grab hair tie, insert needle into first stitch and pull through, leaving the stitch on the left hand needle. Bring needle down through center of hair tie and back down through the same stitch, then slip stitch off left hand needle. You will now have a stitch wrapped around the hair tie. Repeat until all stitches have been transferred off left hand needle. Once all stitches have been transferred, repeat, inserting the needle up through the stitch, then down around the hair tie following the stitch on the hair tie, and back down through the stitch. Repeat as many times as you have yarn left, or until you feel the hair tie is covered up enough with yarn. Leave at least 4” of yarn for weaving in.

Pull yarn somewhat tight so that the yarn in between stitches is not too loose.

then down around the hair tie following the stitch on the hair tie, and back down through the stitch.
Repeat as many times as you have yarn left, or until you feel the hair tie is covered up enough with yarn. Leave at least 4” of yarn for weaving in.

Weave in all loose yarn and your beanie is ready to be worn or gifted.

Finished beanie should be approximately 8” from cast on edge to top of hat and 17” -23” circumference.
