How to Knit the Garter Stitch

with a Slipped Stitch Edge

Terms:

sl1 purlwise  =  slip one stitch purlwise

Terms & Abbreviations explained at the end of the patterns.

Pattern is one row, repeated until desired length is reached.

Cast on an any number of stitches

Start Pattern:

Row 1: sl1 purlwise with yarn in front, knit to end.

Repeat this row until desired length is reached.

This pattern knits with a perfectly straight edge, and is a very nice flat laying stitch.


Garter Stitch: with standard non-slipped stitch edge.

Cast on an any number of stitches

Pattern is one row, repeated until desired length is reached.

Start Pattern:

Row 1: knit to end.

Repeat this row until desired length is reached.

This pattern knits with a perfectly straight clean edge, and is a very nice flat laying stitch.




Terms & Abbreviations:

sl1 purlwise: transfer one stitch from the left hand needle on to the right hand needle without knitting it, when slipping the stitch, insert the needle as if you are going to purl the stitch with the yarn in front of the work. Once the stitch has been slipped from one needle to the next, move the yarn to the back of the work to begin knitting the remainder of the row.
